Showing some gum when smiling is normal and makes your smile youthful. However, some patients show an excessive amount of gum when they smile and can overpower the teeth and cause a “gummy smile”. Depending on the case and the cause of a gummy smile, many gummy smiles can be fixed with a procedure called crown lengthening, or a “gum lift”.

A gum lift is a very minimally invasive procedure. In this procedure, Dr. Moran uses a laser to reshape the gum to the ideal esthetic position. Another instrument is then used to carve the bone around the tooth to ensure the gum doesn’t grow back.

Who are good candidates for a gum lift?

You have excess gum tissue covering your teeth

A lot of patients who have gummy smiles have gum throughout their smile covering their teeth resulting in a lot of gum showing and smaller teeth. If this is the case, just like the photo above, crown lengthening can easily be done to reshape the gums and uncover the beautiful teeth underneath.

You have an uneven gum line

Some patients can just have specific teeth that have more gum covering it. This can cause an uneven smile due to the appearance of uneven tooth size. By doing a gum lift on the specific teeth that have excess gum tissue, we can create a more even and symmetrical smile.

Who's gummy smile may not be fully fixed with a gum lift?

You have a long upper jaw

If the reason you have a gummy smile is due to your long jaw, the gummy smile will not fully be fixed with a gum lift. In the case above, we improved her gummy smile by removing as much excess gum that is covering her teeth. However, you can see her upper jaw is long and goes below her upper lip. To completely fix a case like this, jaw surgery is required.

You have a hyper mobile upper lip

Some patients have a gummy smile because their upper lip moves up excessively when they smile. This will just cause more gum to show. The best solution for a case like this is for a small amount of botox to prevent the upper lip from moving so much.
